Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city now situated in Turkey's province of Kars, next to the closed border with Armenia.
Culture and history
In Kars province the highlight is Ani, a dead city, dominating the gorges of the Arpacayi that mark the frontiers between Turkey and Armenia. Visit the city and its palace and its six churches, remarkable structures of the Armenian architecture.
In the town of Kars, the Armenian Church of the Apostles (937 AD), the 15th-century Ottoman Stone Bridge (Tas Köprü), the grim Citadel (1579), a 19th-century Russian cathedral, and a good local museum.
